Well Woman Exam Q & A
What can I expect at my well-woman exam?
Your age, your reproductive and sexual history, and your overall health history help to determine what to expect at your well-woman exam. At your first visit, typically in your teens, you might just speak to your doctor and have a regular physical exam. The nurse checks your height, weight, and blood pressure, and you can speak to your doctor about concerns with your period, birth control, STD testing, and appropriate immunizations.
If you’re 21 or older, you’ll begin getting yearly pelvic and breast exams as well. A clinical breast exam screens for any signs of abnormalities or lumps that could lead to breast cancer. The internal pelvic exam helps your doctor understand your reproductive health and looks for potential areas of concern.
Typically, after 21, you also begin getting Pap tests to screen for abnormal cells in your cervix that could lead to certain types of cancers. The presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV) can lead to changes in the cells in your cervix and a Pap test supplies evidence of these potential changes, so you and your doctor can take necessary precautions.
What kinds of immunizations will I need?
During your well-woman exam, your doctor talks to you about immunizations you might need, depending on your age and overall health and sexual activity. Based on your individual needs, your doctor could recommend the HPV vaccine, the hepatitis B vaccine, and/or the influenza vaccine.
What specific concerns can I discuss at my well-woman exam?
It’s important to establish a professional relationship with your OB/GYN so they can best help you with any health concerns regarding your overall health and reproductive health. The team at Mott Women Healthcare provides a compassionate, patient-focused environment in which you can discuss personal issues like:
- How often you have periods and how long they last
- Painful periods or intercourse
- Sexual activity and relationships
- Birth control
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Prevention and treatment for STDs
- Diet and exercise habits
- Drug and alcohol use
The team is caring, professional, and knowledgeable about these issues and others. You can talk about these issues and any other concerns you might have so you and your doctor can work together as partners in your health and wellness.
